Grandeur of Borobudur Temple in Indonesia

Borobudur is one of the 7 wonders of the world. Borobudur located in Magelang, Central Java. Borobudur was built in 800 BC or the 9th century by King Samaratungga that comes from the Sailendra dynasty. Borobudur was built in heyday of Sailendra dynasty which are Buddhist relegion. According the story from generation to generation an architect who had idea to build the temple of Borobudur is Gunadharma.

Borobudur was found by Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1814. Raffles revealed the existence of Borobudur after receiving information about the large building buried volcanic ash. Upon discovery of Borobudur, then covered with shrubs. Borobudur often experience reconstruction of the earthquake and volcanic ash eruption Mount Merapi. Borobudur refinement starts from the British colonial period, Holland until Indonesia became independent. With the aid from UNESCO and cultural historians from around the world, Indonesia continues to improve the condition of Borobudur. After more from 10 centuries neglected and unkempt, the temple complex is still standing strong today.

Based on the research historian J.G. de Casparis said that Borobudur is a place of worship. Based on the inscriptions Karangtengah and Tri Tepusan, Casparis estimates founder Borobudur from dynasty Mataram Sailendra king named Samaratungga, doing construction around 824 AD.

Strukut Borobudur has 10 levels consisting from 6 levels of a square, circular level 3 circle and a main stupa as a peak. In each level there are several stupas. Altogether there are 72 stupas in addition to the main stupa. In every stupa there are statues of Buddha. Ten levels of Buddhist philosophy which describes ten Bodhisattva levels which must pass to reach the perfection Buddha in nirvana. This perfection symbolized by the main stupa in the top level. The Borobudur structure when viewed from above form a mandala depicting the structure of Buddhist cosmology and human thinking.

On the four sides temple there is a gate and stairs to the level above it like a pyramid. This illustrates Buddhist philosophy that all life came from rocks. Then into sand stone, then into plants and then into the insect, then into wild animals and pets, and the last to be human. This process known as reincarnation. The last process become the soul and finally go into nirvana. Each stage of enlightenment in this life process based on the philosophy Buddha depicted in relief and sculptures in entire Borobudur.

This giant building just a gigantic pile of stone blocks which have a total height of 42 meters. Each stone spliced without using cement or adhesive. These stones are only connected by patterns and stacked. Basic parts Borobudur temple is about 118 m on each side. The stones used approximately 55,000 cubic meters. All the stone is taken from the river around Borobudur. These stones are be cut and then transported and connected with a pattern like the lego games. All without using glue or cement. While relief began to be made after the completion from rocks stacked and connected. Reliefs found on the walls in the temple.

The ticket price of Borobudur divided into two, namely tickets for domestic tourists (domestic) and foreign tourists with details as follows:

Domestic tourists / Nusantara

     General (Age 6 Years and Over / Person): Rp30,000
     Children (Age Under 6 years old) and Entourage Student: Rp12.500

Abroad Travelers / Foreign

     General (Age 6 Years and Over per person): Rp190.000
     Children Tourists (Age under 6 years): Rp95.000
 
 
 

Transportation Borobudur
To going into Borobudur from Yogyakarta city you can ride the Trans Jogja path leading to the terminal 2A Jombor only Rp 3,000 per person. Jombor dropped from bus station you can take the bus majoring Jombor - The Borobudur and costs around Rp 10,000 per person.
